Training Title: The Role of Assistive Technology in Emergency Preparedness

Training Description: This regional training will focus on the role assistive technology can serve in emergency preparedness as well as disaster response for people with disabilities. In addition, this training will highlight how two states (California and West Virginia) organized their statewide Assistive Technology programs to meet the needs of consumers during a natural disaster. This training will also cover specific information, resources, and expertise the Wisconsin Department of Health Services provides to ready Wisconsin for health threats, emergencies, and disasters for example providing interpreters for those who are Deaf and hard of hearing in emergency situations. The Wisconsin Council on Physical Disabilities will also share their Be Prepared, Have a Plan: Emergency Preparedness Toolkit for People with Disabilities which has tools and resources that can be used by people with disabilities to help them in planning before an emergency or natural disaster occurs.

Ben Barrett

Ben Barrett is currently Chair of the Wisconsin Council on Physical Disabilities. Ben is a self-advocate and has been involved in disability advocacy in Wisconsin for over 20 years. Ben has also been serving on the Emergency Preparedness Committee of the Council since 2006.

Jeff Fox

Jeff Fox is a self-advocate and has been involved in disability advocacy in Wisconsin for over 30 years. Jeff has been a wheelchair user for over 40 years and knows the importance of being prepared for emergencies.

Karen Secor

Karen Secor is currently chair of the Council's Emergency Preparedness Committee and a member at large of the Council. Karen also serves on the Public Health Emergency Preparedness Advisory Committee as representative of the Council.
